Wooden pallets are one of the most accessible free building materials available. Warehouses, garden centers, and local businesses give them away regularly. With a saw, sandpaper, and a few screws, a standard shipping pallet becomes functional home decor. These easy pallet projects work for beginners and produce results that look intentional, not improvised.
Getting Started
- Look for pallets stamped HT (heat treated), not MB (methyl bromide)
- Inspect for broken boards, nails, and mold before taking one home
- Sand all surfaces thoroughly before any project
- A circular saw or reciprocating saw makes dismantling easier
Pallet Wall Shelf
Cut a pallet in half and sand all surfaces. Mount the half-pallet vertically on a wall with heavy-duty screws into studs. The slat openings create natural shelf pockets for small plants, candles, and framed photos. Stain or whitewash the wood to match your room. Total build time: 1 hour.
Pallet Headboard
Dismantle two pallets and cut boards to uniform lengths. Arrange them vertically or horizontally on the wall behind your bed. Secure boards to a plywood backing or mount directly to the wall with construction adhesive and finishing nails. Sand smooth, apply a light stain, and enjoy a rustic headboard that costs under $10.
Adding Lights
Weave a strand of warm white fairy lights through the pallet boards for a soft, bedroom-appropriate glow. Drill small holes to thread wires through and hide the battery pack behind the headboard. This detail turns a simple pallet project into a focal point.
Vertical Pallet Garden
Stand a pallet upright and attach landscape fabric to the back and bottom of each row. Fill with potting soil and plant herbs, succulents, or small flowers through the front openings. Lean the finished planter against an outdoor wall or mount it to a fence. Water from the top and let gravity distribute moisture downward.
Pallet Coat Rack
Cut a single pallet row (3 to 4 boards wide). Sand and stain. Attach vintage hooks, doorknobs, or industrial pipe fittings as hangers. Mount horizontally in your entryway. The pallet provides a rustic backdrop, and the mixed hardware adds character.
Pallet Ottoman
Stack two pallet sections and screw them together. Add four caster wheels to the bottom. Top with a foam cushion wrapped in fabric and stapled underneath. The finished piece works as extra seating, a footrest, or a coffee table alternative.
The appeal of pallet projects is not perfection. It is the texture, the grain patterns, and the fact that something free became something useful and worth keeping.
Safety and Finishing
Wear gloves when handling raw pallets. Pull all nails and staples before sanding. Use 80-grit sandpaper for initial smoothing and 150-grit for the final pass. Always apply a sealant (polyurethane, wax, or outdoor sealant) for durability, especially on pieces that see daily use or outdoor exposure.
